Synopsis
Classical Ghunghroo Vadan (Foot bell Recital) by V. Anuradha Singh
Ghunghroo is a potent yet greatly neglected as a classical musical instrument. This Acoustic instrument has always been used from ages as an appurtenance to various dance forms and folk music. Till now no one has realized its solo importance and so the prominent status is deserved has always been put to back burner. Though the illustriousness of Ghunghroo in our heritage is evident from the fact that in one of the oldest topic of our heritage i.e. Ramayana, Kalidas made its reference in the famous couplets.'Thumak Chalat Ram Chandra Bajat Paijania'
The earliest percussion instruments were our hands and feet. Ghunghru is one of the oldest and most popular musical instruments in the world. Everybody has seen the movement of hands and vocalizations through mouth but playing the ghunghroo through feet in a classical manner is novel and unprecedented experiment. She initiates something as unique, unusual and untried. She has taken over it through systematic research in order to pay tribute to one of the most versatile musical instrument of our cultural heritage.
Made of metal, it appears deceptively simple but to be able to play it in the classical manner, requires some twenty years of training and constant practice which is exhibited in the artistry of Anuradha. "The Ghunghru" is unique and complete and yet no one thought of playing it independently as a instrumental recital, it was always considered as an appendage to various dance forms. Ghunghroo vadan takes great dexterity, infinite patience, superb control, stamina, physical strength and inexhaustible memory bank to incessantly play Ghunghroo in classical manner for more than an hour continuously footing on one place. Ghunghru recital displays a dazzling virtuosity. With amazing crystalline beauty of tone, clarity of stroke, incredible speed, awesome variety, charm, wit, and a charismatic playfulness.
V.Anuradha Singh brings to the stage solo Classical Ghunghroo (foot bell) Recital focusing solely on foot percussive art (90 minutes, non-stop). She has been recognized for foot percussive art & has presented Indian classical Ghunghroo vadan in many reputed music festivals. This concert is unique and innovative. She researched the unique aspects of each percussive gharana through rigorous training with the percussive art of feet. Ghunghru Playing technique involves extensive use of the toe and heel (apply pressure) in various configurations to create a wide variety of different sounds, reflected in the mnemonic syllables (bol). She hold vast amounts of traditional percussive knowledge and expertise. Her footbell percussion forms a perfect union between mind and feet, with the goal to achieve pure classical instrumental acoustic based on the style of famous 5 percussion Gharanas of tabla.
It is the only foot percussive art in the classical music world. She is doing is to enhance the understanding and appreciation of the rich and diverse cultures through the acoustic of Ghunghru. She researched on the ancient uncommon work of classical luminaries as well as famous percussionists. Ghunghroo may be a less known instrument due to reasons like it never got a platform from where it can speak for itself also no individual or organization never gave a thought that it can be performed solely with as versatility as any other percussive , wind or string instrument. Ghunghroo recital which she presents is a total classical percussive art with basic elements, in addition to this it can present great laykari with tayyari of course and it is a conception and innovation in Indian classical music.
The Ghunghroo recital will add a feather in the cap of Indian classical musical & cultural heritage and will definitely bring more awareness amongst art lovers. Your organization conscientious activity in promoting ancient Indian cultural tradition can definitely provide the platform for it. Ghunghroo express that which cannot be said & on which it is impossible to be silent. Ghunghroo carries with it generations of wisdom dating back to antiquity. She made an exhaustive effort to preserve and expand Indian heritage & culture by adding one more chapter to the conferring glory of Indian music in classical manner.
